Woodford Dam Win

Friday: rest.

Saturday: pushed the baby jogger around the Bay. 13.2km at the hottest part of the day – not nice for a pale-skinned pom like me but the passenger enjoyed it:

Sunday: headed to the mountains for the Woodford Dam 19km trail race. A tough course as seen on the elevation chart:

A big crowd turned up. So many that they had to delay the start and split into 2 waves. Extended warm-up jog in search of a loo (one dunny for 260 starters was a bit optimistic). Brendan D and Tux bolted off quickly at the start and I started more slowly in 3rd place picking my way carefully down a very rocky firetrail. I kept Tux in sight and the gap between us held steady once we hit the road alongside the dam. I’m pretty sure he was taking it easy or having a bad day. As soon as we hit the big 1km climb up from the dam wall the gap started to close and I passed him near the top before working hard towards the turn-around. Brendan had been out of sight for ages but at the turnaround I was surprised to find his lead was a minute or less. I hammered the big downhill in an attempt to close the gap and by the time we hit the road he was in sight again which gave me something to chase. I didn’t make much progress until we hit the two big climbs near the finish. On the first climb on the road I made some ground but it was on the final rocky trail climb that I really found another gear and passed him to take the lead with a km or two to go. Very satisfying to cross the line in 1:19:16 for a new race record. A nice confidence boost going into Six Foot.

98km for the week. A bit low, but includes a good tempo session and a good race. So far the training plan is working better than I had expected.

Congrats on the win Tony. Running well. I thought Tux was a red hot fav for podium at Six Foot after his recent runs.

Great run Tony. Looks like you’re hitting form at just the right time. Tucks has had a virus – we’ll see whether he’s recovered in 2 weeks.
